Any book with a chapter titled, "The Green Bay Press-Gazette," has to = be=20 good.

OK, just kidding.

But "The Land of Milk and Money," a collection of life stories by Tom = Hutchison of Green Bay, is filled with insights.

Hutchison, former general manager of WLUK, Channel 11, touched more = than four=20 bases in his trip around life.

He was present at the start of many things, including re-invented = newscasts=20 at WLUK, the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, the forerunner of Wisconsin = Public=20 Television, the "Discover Wisconsin" TV series, Manawa Rodeo and HVS=20 Productions, from which he retired.

Although Hutchison, 78, dealt so much with television, he grew up on = a farm=20 near New London well before TV existed. His parents didn't even own a = radio.

The book contains a delicious chapter on Manawa and The Manawa = Advocate, of=20 which he was editor. He distills small towns this way:

"The invisible boundaries of each community were generally determined = by=20 their high school boundaries. It was the school that brought the parents = to town=20 and tied the community together. That made the local high school the = focal=20 point, its sports, music drama and social events dictated the calendar = for the=20 area.

"Other ties holding the community together were its Main Street = merchants,=20 volunteer fire department, post office, telephone company, the Lions = Club, local=20 politics, the police, the three churches and, the newspaper."

The dramatic comma between "and" and "the" is deliberate.

"You can't have a community this size or any size without a = newspaper," he=20 said.

Hutchison was a reporter and state editor for the Green Bay = Press-Gazette=20 from 1961-64.

By 1967, he was at WLUK, which trailed WBAY, Channel 2, in news by a = furlong.=20 Off came the news, in went "The Beverly Hillbillies" reruns "and we = tripled our=20 ratings," Hutchison said.

WLUK newscasts returned in 1971 with a bang led by flip anchorman = Stanley=20 Siegel.

Hutchison writes, "Once, during the height of the popularity of the = movie=20 'Patton,' Stanley had the three anchors -- himself, Bob Schulze and Ray = Wheeler=20 -- introduced while wearing Nazi uniforms.

Hutchison was at WLUK for 22 years, 16 as general manager. After he = was fired=20 in 1982 when the station experienced a few years of falling revenues, he = started=20 HVS -- which stands for Home Video Shopper -- and made infomercials for = local=20 cable.

"At that time, television stations could not run infomercials," he = said. "The=20 longest commercial you could run was 60 seconds."

If that makes you go, "oh," there are more in the book.
